Anybody but Jagmeet

Jagmeet Singh suffers from Obama Syndrome.

Singh is the no-so white candidate whose minority status is supposed to bring us all together.  Obama was the not-so-black candidate whose status was to do the same.

Obama  was half-white --but,  by the luck of the draw,  he had black skin.  He could have had white skin easily enough --in which case he would have been the not-so-white candidate rather than the not-so-black one.   Any representative of a minority group is to some degree hobbled by public concern that he or she might not be even handed.  Not that Obama was in any way representative of black people in the US. In fact, he was more representative of the white elites he attended Harvard with.

"Barry" did absolutely nothing for black people and despite his origination campaign promises he didn't do anything for the progressive cause at all -- he  was just a little to the right of Ronald Reagan, who he admired.

Singh is a poster boy for the Sikh community. He comes from a wealthy and privileged family.  He rides a bicycle occasionally for photo-ops and then switches to his BMW. The turban and beard are compromised by the bespoke suits and the Rolex. His policy positions are almost indistinguishable from those of Trudeau. He is hardly the Punjabi progressive - hardly a progressive of any kind.

In general,  the supports Trudeau's atavistic foreign policy which is , in all important respects,  indistinguishable from Stephen Harper's--regressive, if not subtly fascistic.

Basically, Jagmeet just "tweaks" Trudeau-ism. He is a politcal gardener pruning the rose bush that previous leaders grew.

So he supported Trudeau's imprisonment of Huawei's CFO Meng and silenced critics in his party.

Does Singh fear that if he veered left toward a true progressive policy, there would be a backlash against Sikhs?

I don't think so. Singh wears a turban and doesn't cut his beard.  But that doesn't mean he really understands Sikh social philosophy.

In the end, he is just another opportunistic lawyer.
