Hillary the Avatar vs Trump the Person

If you vote for Hillary, you are not voting for a person, you are voting for an avatar that speaks for a group of people.   Whatever Hillary was as an individual personality has been subsumed by a collective identity for which she is merely a mouthpiece.

We are simple creatures, of course.  We evolved for life in small groups, where everyone shared the same basic culture and beliefs – and individual difference was really that – individual – always granted so long as it did not threaten others. We want to think that Hillary is a person --
singular  rather than a plurality.  So most people don’t see her as an avatar, an icon, a personification of something.

     Who does Hillary speak for?

She speaks for a coalition of tribes – Wall Street, large corporations, the upper echelons of government and military – the rich and the privileged. Sounds like a crowd -- but it is actually a small group. They would all fit in one grand party in Martha’s Vineyard.

Hillary is a professional politician. She was never one of the Few – rather, she was brought up to aspire to power, in the same way that Rome’s Equestrian class aspired to become patricians—and, of course, occasionally came to do so.

By contrast, Trump already had money and power.  He was born a patrician.   He does not aspire to join the Few – he’s already there.  He needs to prove nothing.

    Who does he speak for?

Mostly – just for himself.  Which is why he is inconsistent and often…um… impolitic.

Keep that word in your head – impolitic

Trump does not do politics as Hillary does.
Hillary is not an honest woman.  And, in fact, she clearly perjured herself when she declared under oath that she knew nothing about the transfer of Libyan weapons to Syria prior to Benghazi.  Hillary knows that politics is all about artful obfuscation of agendas; she is only too aware that personal belief and opinion mean zilch compared to policy; that one must lie gracefully.

It is Trump who is called the liar. He is in fact, rather honest. Honest enough to unselfconsciously contradict himself.  He just says what he wants, without considering too much the impact on those who might disagree.

When you are born a patrician, that’s one of the perks.

So does Trump care about ideology?    Obviously not at all – which is why he has singlehandedly destroyed the GOP – at the same time directly confronting Liberals who would reduce the working classes  to a mob of intellectually lazy, uninformed, racist, sexist yahoos.

Politically incorrect or not -- he brings real issues to the fore.  His comments to the Khans were ... yes ... impolitic.  But the fact is that their son died because the US embarked on an illegal -- and unconstitutional -- war.  Trump did not support it.  Hillary did.  Hillary has killed a lot of Middle Eastern people.  Trump? None at all.

Trump is an avatar for Trump.   This is not to say that I would vote for Trump -- not when there is a perfectly sensible alternative in Jill Stein.   Just that he is the Lesser Evil.
